team:abunai ::: seg_fault ::: about

I make music, I think.

I am Justin Evans, a.k.a., Segmentation Fault, formerly known on team::abunai as SIDS, a name I had to change due the to the fact that an assload of other musicians/bands call themselves that. I think I needed something original, something that is more akin to my like (complete fucking geek). Web developer by weekday, experimental musician by night and weekends. I make music, and I listen to music, and love good music. I started working with electronic music technology ten years ago, at the age of 15, thus making me 25 years old now. The music I have posted on this site for your pleasure was created within that decade. I believe you will find the material to differ greatly from piece to piece, because as you know, a lot can happen in ten years.

Throughout this time, I have been exposed to various mediums which have influenced the work (dicking around with synthesizers and sequencers) I do, and also inspired me to do the work in the first place. That being said, what has influenced me has only motivated me to take what it was that I liked, or loved, about music, and add what I would love to add to that. I believe that's how music in general evolves, and this holds true in all areas of human achievement. Take what is good (or for that matter, bad) and improve on it.

You may now be aware that I have basically dug a hole for myself. I've raised your expectations by proclaiming that I, infact, have improved on something. However, I cannot say that. I compose and perform what I do because it's what I want to hear, and I remain humble. The recording quality, composition, everything, can be improved on. I never wanted my music to fall into a genre, but inevitably, people will certainly find a genre that my music would fall into. Perhaps a "catch-all" genre, who knows. Let's say IDM, just for example. Intelligent Dance Music. Do I compose "Dance Music"? Well, I suppose you could dance to it, but you could probably dance to about anything if you were fucked up enough. "Intelligent"? Well, shit, I hope so. I really don't intend to write "Insipid" or "Trite" or "Stupid" music. I basically just sit down, when I have the time, and zone out on an idea. Music is my favorite form of art, and if there is anything I can contribute to that, I remain content. But, my music sucks, to me anyways. I say this because I know what can be done better, where a section really should go, what tempo is should be at, what sound could be changed, etc., etc.... When I get to it, I'll make my "songs" more "bearable", I hope.

(Note to self: find a technology and stick with it! Stop trying to do everything man. If you don't focus, everything that comes out of you will be mediocre. Get with it, punk!)

I must wrap this up by saying that I am deeply interested in a large variety of music. From all areas of music, there is something I can pick out that I like, am moved by, or just plain interested in. I tend to focus on artists within an area of music style that have taken it to a new level, taking what was good about the style (or styles) they perform and creating an entirely new concept with it. "Experimental" music, I would suppose. That's what gets me off. Experimental music that is good (IMHO). Basically the moral of this story is this: I like what I like. Perhaps you can find the correct influences in my style, but keep in mind, not only music inspires music. Life and everything in our experience on this planet influences the work we do. At least I think so. It does for me anyhow. I think that's enough bullshit for now. Just listen to the MP3s, please? Will ya? I'm not out to make money (unless you're offering); this is my passion. Take them. Remix them. Delete them. Love them. Hate them. Tell you're friends how much they suck. Whatever.
